Directional Possession
"Directional Possession" is an advanced tactical drill designed to improve passing accuracy, spatial awareness, and player movement within a defined 30m x 20m area. The team is split into two even groups, with additional players serving as 'Wall Players' at each end of the field. The objective is for teams to maintain possession, effectively utilising the wall players to facilitate play and score points. This setup encourages players to make strategic decisions under pressure, enhancing their ability to control the game through precise passing and dynamic positioning.
Key Points
- Setup: A 30m x 20m area with the team divided into two even groups. One player from each team positions as a \'Wall Player\' at opposite ends.
- Players: Even teams, plus one or two wall players. If numbers are uneven, a \'joker\' plays for the possession team.
- Objectives: Keep possession and use wall players to earn points. Each successful pass to and from a wall player equals one point.
- Rules:
- Teams work to maintain possession and incorporate wall players into their play.
- After 2 minutes, rotate the wall players.
- Implement touch limits or restrictions on repeated passes to increase difficulty.
- Duration: 10-15 minutes
- Coaching tips:
- Emphasise the importance of firm, accurate passes using the correct technique.
- Encourage an aggressive first touch, moving the ball into space, away from defenders, or to set up the next action.
- Instruct players to position themselves so the ball carrier always has options in all directions.
- Stress the significance of adopting an open body position to better receive passes and scan the field before receiving the ball.
- Defensively, focus on applying immediate pressure and closing down passing channels to disrupt the opposition's play.
- Variations:
- Limit the number of touches a player can take before passing.
- Prohibit the same player from receiving consecutive passes from a wall player.
- Introduce a competitive points system to foster a match-like intensity.
- Restrict wall players from passing directly to the opposite wall player.
- Add goals for an additional scoring option.
