Anticipation
"Anticipation" is a strategic and fast-paced drill set within a 30m x 20m area, designed to improve passing accuracy, player movement, and anticipation in a dynamic team environment. Players are divided into two teams, each member numbered from 1 to 6. The objective is for players to pass the ball in numerical order while simultaneously navigating the movement of the opposing team within the same space. This drill challenges players to maintain focus, communication, and spatial awareness as they execute passes and move to support their teammates, all within the intertwined play of two active groups.
Key Points
- Setup: A 30m x 20m area with players split into two even teams and numbered 1 through 6.
- Players: Two teams, each player assigned a unique number within their team.
- Objectives: Enhance passing accuracy, support movement, and develop anticipation and spatial awareness.
- Rules:
- Players pass in sequence (1 to 2 to 3… and then back to 1).
- Both teams operate simultaneously in the same area, creating dynamic movement patterns.
- After making a pass, players must touch a cone on the perimeter before continuing.
- Duration: 10-15 minutes
- Coaching tips:
- Encourage players to take their first touch in the direction of their next intended action, facilitating smoother transitions.
- Stress the importance of both short and long passes, adapting to the movement and positioning of both teammates and opponents.
- Promote constant movement off the ball, ensuring players position themselves to receive passes effectively.
- Foster descriptive and proactive communication among players to maintain flow and anticipate the next plays.
- Encourage players to be aware of their sequence in the passing order, as well as the positions and movements of their teammates.
- Variations:
- Reverse the numerical order of passes for a new challenge (6 to 5 to 4, etc.).
- Require passes to be made between two opposing players, emphasizing the skill of 'breaking lines' to find passing lanes.
